The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Linguistics offers graduate courses leading to the degrees of Master of Arts in French, German and Spanish; and the Doctor of Philosophy in French or Spanish. Advanced courses and seminars are offered in all the major fields and periods of French, German, Spanish, and Spanish-American literature.
MA degrees in French, German, and Spanish are offered in both a thesis and a non-thesis program. The non-thesis program consists of 32 hours of acceptable graduate-level coursework and a final comprehensive examination.
Requirements for the thesis program in Spanish are 26 hours of acceptable graduate-level coursework, a thesis for which a maximum of four thesis credit hours is granted, and a final comprehensive examination. Requirements for the thesis in French and German are 24 hours of acceptable graduate-level coursework, a thesis for which a maximum of six thesis credit hours is granted, and a final comprehensive examination.
The Ph.D. degree requires a general examination and 90 hours of acceptable graduate-level coursework beyond the bachelor’s degree, including any applicable credit earned for the M.A., 61 hours of coursework in the major, and nine hours in the minor.
All applicants must complete a General OU Application. International students must complete a different application than US citizens and fulfill additional requirements. The links below will explain these guidelines:

Please note that all materials of your application have to be uploaded electronically to your application (see link above) and therefore, they are NOT to be sent in hard copy. Besides the writing sample(s) also your CV and your personal statement must be in French/German/Spanish. The personal statement of intent should be between 250 and 500 words and describe your accomplishments and plans for the future. This statement serves to assess whether your goals are in line with those of the program and to assess your ability to write in the foreign language.
